Ring of Eggs #2

Four Perfect Eggs, Nevermore
1

AFTER INSTALLING the camera in the early spring, we watched the two adult robins (via an app on our phone) diligently build their nest, manifest four perfect blue eggs, and watch over them day and night. But then, tragedy occurred. One day, after having been away for a few hours, we came home to find an empty nest. There were some remnants of broken up shells nearby on the grass. We wondered who or what disturbed the nest. But then, of course, I realized … we had it all on camera.

I scrolled back through the previous hours, and was shocked and slightly horrified to watch a crow enter the nest, and steal away all four eggs, one at a time [see above footage.]

Needless to say, this was devastating. A reasonable and sympathetic friend tried to comfort us by explaining, while this was bad for the robin, it was good for the crow, and part of nature. I mean, I can appreciate that. Every bird for themselves and all. But still.

The saga with the robin’s nest didn’t end there, and I’ll be back soon to tell you (and show you) what happened next.
